Interpretation of images by materialising dreamlike elements through the use of leather, technical textiles, sailcloth and waterproof fabric. These materials are assembled and brought to life using various embroidery techniques such as bouti, fil couché and quilting, to create landscapes that are both tangible and unreal.

«  In the topic of passport photos, the human face is transformed into an emblem of emotionless existence within a standardized frame. The requirement for a neutral expression demands the suppression of any hint of individuality or feeling, rendering the passport photo canvas an uncanny landscape where personal expression is supposed to be muted. The face becomes a symbol of bureaucratic conformity, stripped of its nuances and complexities. »

Both artists have a unique approach to exploring and transforming materials. Charlotte uses fabric and threads as a medium for storytelling, while João transforms materials he finds into new realities. They breathe new life and meaning into the materials they work with, introducing new significance that transcends their typical properties and original purpose. By adding or removing layers and altering and shaping the texture, the artists achieve depth in their works.

EPHEMERA

A 5 x 8 meters banner. For this installation, textile becomes a central element of the historical architecture of Kunsthal Gent. The mural hanging redefines the space by recomposing its chronology. "Keepsake" ties in with Kunsthal Gent's Endless Exhibition, in which works do not have a definitive place but can be moved or adapted in the future. The installation aims at involving inside and outside of the building, as a banner for the ever-changing future of Kunsthal Gent. Pictures by Michiel De Cleene

SOME SELECTED PROJECTS

This diptych, hand-woven from cotton, wool and silk threads, depicts two statues planted in an imaginary setting. Nailed to their pedestals, they seem to belong to no age, as if abandoned. Yet they are anything but inert. Like two idols, referring to the female body as an object exposed to the gaze, they come to life in a rumbling, disquieting landscape, but with vibrant colors that incite dreamlike adventure. They occupy a space all their own, under the midday and sunset sun. In a symbolic gesture of self-palpation, these two sculptures do more than recall the strict medical gesture of prevention and screening: they invite us on a journey. They also offer a gateway to self-exploration, to the knowledge - and reappropriation - of one's own body. Their swaying arms, swaying in a contrast of colors, encourage us to look inward, sometimes uncertainly. GONE FISHING

In a single physical place, this exhibition gathers spaces and events that by themselves would seem discordant, forming a dematerialized territory where escaping and inhabiting become permeable notions. A fragile area, where confusion is always possible, from where arises a fraction of a sensitive eagerness that allows to reveal the poetic strength of objects. By superposing our beliefs, by superposing the coincidences that we have noticed before, we want to recreate desire for contemplation.
In order to escape of the temptation of a perpetual linear script, we are seeking to set a temporary order of things and to ceaselessly reexamine the way in which they interlink. L’Âge de Roseau is an invitation to roam the space of otherness, a place where imagination does not defy reality, a place where it is not its contrary or its opponent.
